I've just had a look. The cistern is bone dry for the top 4-6 inches then sopping wet all around it's surface below that point. There is water on the toilet rim presumably from the run-off from the cistern. Also the toilet cistern is nowhere near the other problem areas - i.e. other damp floor...

Thanks for the replies I think last 2 (johnD & gasmick2) are probably closer to the mark. It has to be condensation on the cistern (as stops above water mark). The fan is a Vent-Axia VA100 (XT i think). It is manually operated but with a variable timer that allows it to continue running...
