excuse my ignorance but what does regulated power mean ?

I have just bought a wireless cctv system. I attached a new 9v battery and within minutes the battery was dead. My question now is this: in the instruction manual it says you can add a 5-8v 500Ma power supply instead of using 9v battery. Having looked on flea bay there isn't many power supplies...
