hi, might sound a bit silly here but , have you tried a colour card ? to do this you might want to try and get hold of , say , dulux , leyland, johnstones , B&Q , the more the better as thepaint manufactures have slightly different shades to each other . there are over 4800 different...

apply a coat of matt emulsion thinned by about 30% to the bare plaster . then i would go for a water based eggshell as a finnish apply 2 coats , 1st coat thinned by 10% and the final coat straight from the tin (pure). hope that helps
