thats right. just the lampholder and the wire to the ceiling rose. I didn't touch any of the wires except the neutral and earth that came from the old lampholder wire

i replaced the whole fitting cos it was the lampholder that was broken. I do think it may be the switches cos they have all been replaced. Could it be the double switch downstairs in the hall that opeartes the landing light and the hall light that maybe has been wired incorrectly.

How would I detect if the switch is wired incorrectly.

now that you mention that it could be the switch that makes sense. the light in question can be operated from upstairs on a single switch and downstairs on a double that also operates the hall. Think i would be better getting an elctrician do you think

there is a fault somewhere but it is difficult to establish what it is. Thought it was a faulty ceiling rose. It seems that it is lectrical but have only put wires back in exactly the same places as wires came out when I replaced the ceiling rose.
