    Covid-19 Gambles

Are you deliberately being obtuse, or just snarky? There's a difference in comparing 2 similar (in some ways) countries to find out what differences were actually at play (when those differences were more varied and nuanced than lockdown/no lockdown), to making an blunt association between...

    Covid-19 Gambles

Staw man: nobody's suggested doing nothing. No argument with that. All we can do is look closely at what we now know. But there'll be another pandemic at some point, and I hope we can learn from this one: what to do and what not to do. Agree, but nobody else really has tried to even speculate...

    Covid-19 Gambles

Well you could save them all the time and effort, since you already have all the answers. I'm sure that half the deaths in care homes have nothing whatsoever to do with it. https://www.euronews.com/2020/11/25/serious-deficiencies-sweden-s-retirement-homes-under-fire-over-coronavirus-care...

    Covid-19 Gambles

If I removed all the time-series labels from this graph, and the key, and asked you to state which line was associated with stringent lockdowns, which would you choose? Which country "flattened the curve" to best effect?

I don't see the distinction, and I think you're avoiding what is a very difficult question. I've attempted to define some metrics to make it tangible in terms of economic, health and social damage. Very hard to quantify, but they are real nonetheless. Surely any justification of potentially...

    Covid-19 Gambles

Yes, I'm aware of that. With a high proportion of vaccinated population we would expect a corresponding high number of vaccinated admissions, given that no vaccine is 100% effective. Especially, as seems to be the case, that the vaccine is less effective in those for whom the disease poses most...

    Covid-19 Gambles

I don't have to postulate an alternative. I'm asking the lockdown zealots to justify what they have been advocating whilst taking into account the adverse effects of said lockdown. And I'm not being very successful - possibly because nobody knows, or perhaps because there is an uncomfortable...

    Covid-19 Gambles

Wow. Have you even considered the inevitable and grave damage of what you're advocating?

    Covid-19 Gambles

Well, in that case we'll be social distancing forever. Don't you think that this is seriously disproportionate? Perhaps you don't, and we'll disagree. This won't be the last pandemic in my my lifetime. I shudder to think what will be done in the name of public health for a disease which is...

    Covid-19 Gambles

That may be so, but there are also a good number of papers which challenge this. And nobody's yet tried to argue that lockdown is a sustainable and proportionate measure, given that they have effects far beyond suppression of a virus. Would you, for instance, advocate lockdown for seasonal flu...

    Covid-19 Gambles

I agree with all of that. I do think that the burden of proof must be with the lockdown proponents though. They must demonstrate efficacy and proportionality. I have seen little of the first, and none of the second.

    Covid-19 Gambles

I've enjoyed reading the vaccine efficacy discussion. It's not something I've done much independent research into, so thanks to those who have. As might be expected in this 'parish', there's been a lot of detailed discussion on narrow topics, but nobody's really responded to my question on...

Edit: I'm not now even certain that his correction was correct. And I'm weary of having to check govt statements and stats. I assume now by default that they are dishonest or obfuscated.

    Covid-19 Gambles

Yes, my mistake. You are correct. In light of this high efficacy, I'm finding it hard to reconcile the current seemingly 50/50 or so split in hospitalizations. Is this to be expected or not? Anecdotally, I do know a few people who have Covid at the moment, and they've all been vaccinated. And...

    Covid-19 Gambles

Yes, I think we agree on this. (!) My point about mumps was that can affect male fertility, so that is clearly not a reason per se for females to take it, but mumps is a horrid experience whoever you are, as I can attest.

    Covid-19 Gambles

As a well vaccinated person, I shouldn't think so. Some work better than others. Some are very safe and effective. Some have been withdrawn. Some use novel technology. Some have only emergency use authorization.

Please explain why it's nonsense. What were the results of the trials in terms of efficacy?

    Covid-19 Gambles

Ditto with girls and mumps (though mumps nastier than rubella). Difference is that these vaccinations prevent the disease extremely reliably, and have an established safety record.
