    Basic dimming vs automation

This is great. Can all of @ban-all-sheds responses be spun off into a separate thread where they can be ignored?

We need to talk about Kevin, sorry, I mean ban-all-sheds

Aye - fair enough. I'm not on here enough to let any of this bother me unduly, other than when I'm actually on here. It's clearly not a secret that I have an issue with bas in particular, and I have tried to explain what these issues are. Listen, if it turns out that I'm in the minority and...

We need to talk about Kevin, sorry, I mean ban-all-sheds

Is it reasonable for us all (including first-time posters) to walk on eggshells so that we don't wind him up? We very frequently try to reason with the chap to try to get him to rein in his methods. I'm trying to be upfront and bring the discussion to the fore, including bas. As someone...

We need to talk about Kevin, sorry, I mean ban-all-sheds

Thanks for taking the time to read my OP and respond in kind. No, bas hasn't specifically upset or annoyed me but the cumulative effect of his contribution just frustrates the hell out of me. You suggest that I should just ignore him and that's clearly an option for me. But I've been on here...

We need to talk about Kevin, sorry, I mean ban-all-sheds

Really? Your selective quoting is your defense? BAS; my position is that this sub-forum would get along better without you. Feel free to weigh in with a counter-argument.

We need to talk about Kevin, sorry, I mean ban-all-sheds

With apologies to Lionel Shriver, we can't keep burying our heads in the sand when it comes to ban-all-sheds ("bas"). Another thread was deleted, partly I'm sure, due to personal insults directed to bas by me. Can we please have a grown up conversation about bas' contribution to this sub-forum...

Can't read my electric meter. Any suggestions?

    There's a humerous discussion of the pic over here... My favourite comments are;

    Selling houses and inspections

Bear in mind that the (potential) buyer can make any demand that he or she wants over and above the statutory requirements - it's then up to the seller whether they are willing to accept it. An EICR isn't massively expensive (£200-£300?) so I'd offer to go half on it; even if the sale falls...

Can I mount electrical sockets on a suspended panel?

Yes - that exactly. A panel of wood secured to the rafters. It's primarily semi-permanent kit (drill press, bench saw, charger, etc) rather than hand tools that could pull at the plugs.

Can't read my electric meter. Any suggestions?

Jeezez m.....king crap. I was having quite a good night till I saw that! Tell me it's not real or, if it is, the 1P 240V 50HZ markings don't mean it's in the UK.

Can I mount electrical sockets on a suspended panel?

I can't see any reason why this wouldn't be allowed but thought I'd ask. This is in a garage, where I had a professional fit four double sockets on the rafters in a ring final circuit back to the garage's CU. I'm going to be installing 130mm PUR insulation into the rafters which will...

    WIRING A SHED

I know that it can be difficult to extrapolate, but b-a-s (aka BAN), has your best interest at heart. And the best interests of your immediate family, anyone who visits your home, and anyone who purchases the home in the future. b-a-s isn't alone in being concerned for your welfare - he raises...

    WIRING A SHED

I know I give you a hard time, b-a-s, but this is a great example of what the O-P is asking and a reasonable response that shows why he should not be attempting to do what he is trying to do. I don't want to divert off into a pointless debate but if you could answer like this each time then you...

    Inspection and sign off?

I had a plumber doing some work for me on a refurbishment - he'd been recommended by a friend of a friend... He did some decent work, gas and water, and just when he was about finished he disappeared off the face of the earth. Long story short, it turns out the guy had alcohol and gambling...

    Emergency Stop Button

I would, but the garage is currently full with 50sq m of Kingspan so I can't get to anything! Mine has a unit very similar to this one (which is what I think Eric first linked to). The router is designed to be fitted to a table so has a latch for the switch so that it can be permanently powered...

    Old electrics' new home.

Someone else with knowledge of which regulation changes came in re RCDs will be along in a moment, but I doubt a 25 year old house built by a household name will need to be rewired. The key will be to make sure you get three quotes and don't employ anyone who doesn't inspire faith.

Single socket replacement - multiple live / neutral cables

What advice or knowledge is the OP going to glean from these links, over and above the advice he has received here, for the specific task he is looking to complete? The OP asked whether it was normal and has been reassured that it is - he doesn't need to buy an electrics book to screw the...

    Old electrics' new home.

Was the house a self-build, or built by a "reputable" (or at least large!) house builder? If it was built by a major company only 20 years ago then the modifications, FCUs, etc are likely just added on to what was presumably a compliant / half-decent install in the first place and your...

    Emergency Stop Button

This, and the second picture in Eric's post, is the kind of switch that is built into my router table and I think it covers your requirements. You lift the cover to press the on button, then the cover flips down to present an emergency stop button - when you whack the cover it presses the off...

Garage electric funny old cable - help please

Jeez. You are a contrary cuss, aren't you, b-a-s? :sneaky: Most of the time on here you're extremely quick to instruct someone that they are not competent to perform some task, but all of a sudden you're advocating that an amateur could/should invest in the tools and time required to terminate...
