Thanks for your comments ..... I've just had it checked and the current is definatly on in that circuit. the spar/switch looks very similar to this one Still no light on in the boiler though.

it's not a normal socket, it's a plugless one with the boiler's wire going directly into it. There is a red light on the socket though which presumeably means that there is current and the fuse is ok?
