    Escape windows too small

Hello. Just fitted the first pair of new hinges. They did the job and have increased the clear opening to the 450mm minimum I needed (please see attached before and after photos). The supplier was DGS Leeds Ltd, the hinges are called 'Mega Egress' and have a product code of F/SME12SH16.5. Cheers

    Escape windows too small

Great news. A really helpful guy at DGS Leeds Limited suggested keeping the windows side hung and replacing the existing hinges with their Mega Egress hinges. He even sent me a pair to try. They open the sash until only about 25mm is projecting into the frame opening but they also throw the sash...

    Escape windows too small

Thanks for your reply. I'm making enquiries with several of the larger hinge manufacturers. If they come up with anything new I'll post it back on here for interest.

    Escape windows too small

Hello. I've just finished a self build and had the final inspection from Building Control which has highlighted a problem with 3 of my upstairs windows which are designated as escape windows but are too narrow. They are side hung uPVC casements fitted with escape/easy clean friction hinges. The...

External render cracks & mould growth

Thanks very much. I agree, anything other than starting again would just be hiding the problem. I appreciate everyone's time.

External render cracks & mould growth

Very sorry for the delay in replying but thank you for your responses. The whole gable was rendered in one go, there was no patching in anywhere. The wall faces southwest, the direction of our prevailing weather. I was offered any option of finish. I chose a smooth finish using white sand &...

External render cracks & mould growth

Thanks for your response. What you've said rings alarm bells. Iv'e recently cement rendered a section of internal wall that will form part of a shower encloser. When I researched how to do it, it became apparent that I should not use PVA because of the damp conditions and I ended up using an...

External render cracks & mould growth

Hi. About a year ago I finished the modifications/extensions to my house and had a local plasterer apply the external render. This involved him rendering onto old brick, new lightweight celcon blocks and new dense concrete blocks. The render was formed from a sand/cement scratch coat with...

Remeha Avanta 18V boiler - frost protection

Thanks for your comments. Back to the original question about the frost protection. I'd really like to use the boiler's integrated device but now I think I realise that when activated everything happens within the clever electronics and there's nowhere for me to tap into that uniquely...

Remeha Avanta 18V boiler - frost protection

It doesn't have to be an 18V. The only given I had when looking round was it had to have a stainless steel HE. I've mostly been guided by comments on sites such as this one. Overall, Remeha came out pretty well but I must admit that I didn't take much notice to see if the comments applied...

Remeha Avanta 18V boiler - frost protection

Thanks very much for the wiring diagrams. The garage is frost free. It was built with the intention of using as a year round workshop with the possibility of future conversion to accommodation. It's super insulated, double glazed and draught proofed whereas the wall between it and the...

Remeha Avanta 18V boiler - frost protection

Thanks for responding. I had dowloaded the 'Installation & Service Manual' from the Remeha site but it didn't answer my question. Iv'e just been back to the site and can't find any additional wiring diagrams for this boiler -am I mising something?

Remeha Avanta 18V boiler - frost protection

Can anyone give me some advice please. I intend to install a new heating system ths year and will be fitting a Remeha Avanta 18V boiler. By neccessity, the boiler will be fitted on the external wall of an integral garage. The Remeha Manual has details about the 'Integrated Boiler Frost...

Cavity trays - pre-formed or DIY corners?

Hi. Hope you can help me out. I'm trying to form a cavity tray immediately above the DPC in a new extension. I'm using Ruberoid Hyload DPC (the same as I used for the DPC) but I'm not sure what to do at the corners. I think trying to join corners at an angle will be pretty impossible and...

    Slip membrane?

Hello everyone. I'd appreciate a bit of advice please. I'm building an extension (it's been 2 years now!) and I'm about ready to fit the steel hip support for the sun room which is mostly glass with a blockwork pillar at the corner. The support consists of 2 steel angles (125 x 75) about...
