I have some new taps which came with flexible pipe tails. The O-ring end goes into the tap block, and at the other end there is a captive screw connection with a washer. What should this connect to? I thought it might be a 10mm compression fitting, but it's too big for that (and too small...

I'm plumbing a new washing machine and am tapping into the existing sink waste via a new open trap with U-bend. The existing waste which I am using is about 400mm up, so there is only room for a short vertical length of waste pipe below the worktop. Does that matter?
