    What caused this?

Most likely, it's the white plastic cowl around the socket that's melted.

    Understanding Motor Name Plates

Typically you get 220V 3 phase supplies on equipment that was not designed for the UK. To use this equipment you then have a large transformer to bring the UK's 415V 3phase down to 220V 3phase. The only difference is the voltage, the phase lag between each phase is identical to what you...

    Understanding Motor Name Plates

Hi, the Delta spec is 3 phase too, I have worked in some installations that have around 200V 3 phase. You would wire the motor in Star if you have 415V 3 phase or Delta if you have 220V 3 phase. Wiring it in Star when you only have a 220V supply obviously you will lose a lot of torque as...

Reducing current taken by an immersion heater

A bodge might be to fit a high power diode into the element circuit, it would still pull 3KW peak but the average would be half that. More suitable would be a triac circuit with zero crossing switching to keep line noise down to a minimum and allow fine control of the power drawn from the...

    overheating neutral link

Higher resistance = lower current so the longer the cable the less 'stress' it will be under.

    Immersion Heater not working!

We haven't even established if the fused socket is live yet, maybe it has tripped or another fuse has blown in the CU.

Fuse in neutral blows when machine turned off

Hi all, a strange fault for you I hope, something to get those little grey cells working ;) A PLC power supply that has a 2A fuse in the live and a 2A fuse in the neutral...an Italian design. Sometimes when the machine is turned off the 2A fuse in the neutral will blow. Anyone come...

PART P, ive got an interesting one.

You could argue that all connection boxes need to be accessible and this one clearly isn't without the consent of the neighbour so therefore does not comply with part 'P'. :P

How many of you have had 240v shocks before?

Had a few... Shock 1) Stuck a fork onto a 1KW fire bar...10 years old Shock 2) Stuck a TV neon lamp into a lead for a radio cassette, I touched the wires going to the neon which were insulated but still got a shock...14 years old Shock 3) touched the frame of a washing machine motor...

Are car spares a rip off?

Makes you sick doesn't it. I mean even £1 for a light bulb. The company I work for makes them, one person runs a machine that spews out 5000 of these a shift and they sure don't get £5K a day in wages

    Cable jointing

Personally I would install a 3-phase isolator and then just insert a single fuse in one of the phases to supply the accomodation. This allows for further expansion in the future and is also easier to do than a joint.

    Immersion Heater Timer Burning Out

Electrics keep tripping... Please help me diagnose it.

Had a similar fault on my downstairs sockets, I found that a live wire had been 'pinched' between the socket front and pattress box when someone put the socket back on. We have been in the property for 3 years so it just goes to show how long a fault like this can take to develop.
