Split-load Switch / RCD flipping down repeatedly

Why write spark in quotes like that? ;) He is from Checkatrade with 31 x 10 rated reviews. He was very clear with me - in writing - that putting the boiler on a RCBO was not a guarantee the problem would be resolved. I'll quote - "I can get an RCBO for£40 and I'd charge £70 to fit but obviously...

Split-load Switch / RCD flipping down repeatedly

I have no idea what that even entails, though, so how can I ask for it to be done?

Split-load Switch / RCD flipping down repeatedly

So the RCD did trip, without any MCB tripping, but the boiler was - obviously - OK now it's on its RCBO and I'm (everyone is!) glad it's ruled-out. That leaves External Sockets, Ground Floor Lights (inc. the external lights - which could be a suspect), First Floor Lights, First Floor Sockets...

Split-load Switch / RCD flipping down repeatedly

Yes, been doing that... I think I mentioned before - sometimes it's overnight. Today it seemed linked to when I moved an unplugged vacuum cleaner in the understairs cupboard (obviously not, but that's what I was doing at the time)... so far it has seemed random, but we have had a lot of rain in...

Split-load Switch / RCD flipping down repeatedly

No; but he wasn't there for that... he just did what I asked him to today... now there's a chance it's not boiler-related and, if so, it tripping becomes significantly less of a problem if the heating is still on. I do know what he charges for open-ended fault-finding though and I may end up...

Split-load Switch / RCD flipping down repeatedly

Today I've had the MCB the boiler was on made redundant and the boiler has been moved to a new and separate RCBO. The RCD tripping has continued since last I posted, only intermittently. My hope is that if the RCD keeps on tripping and taking out multiple MCBs without providing a clue, then at...

Split-load Switch / RCD flipping down repeatedly

So... if I was minded to (and I might) then I should have someone come in and swap out all the existing MCBs with new RCBOs and this would then pinpoint my issue once it ever re-occurred (assuming it would - hasn't today after sometime last night, so far)? And the RCDs currently sat in there...

Split-load Switch / RCD flipping down repeatedly

I've just eyeballed and felt around the external 2-way socket. It's in a plastic box attached to the wall, there's a bead of silicone around it, no water collecting inside, it has a plastic drop-down door in well place. Nothing to see there I think. Well, I doubt that I can check any further...

Split-load Switch / RCD flipping down repeatedly

    a) there are 3 outside lights, some are high up, but I will try and check b) I can easily check the outside socket c) the boiler is not on a 13A socket, it is on a fused spur (a white box with wires and a rectangular place for a fuse to go) The intermittent-ness of this certainly has me worried...

Split-load Switch / RCD flipping down repeatedly

Thank you, that certainly would've been what I assumed too.

Split-load Switch / RCD flipping down repeatedly

I don't have any insight into that... but it definitely does have dual Wylex WRS80/2 RCDs... it was probably installed around 2010 / 2011.

Split-load Switch / RCD flipping down repeatedly

Well, we did get a new telly - that was about 3 or 4 weeks ago - that telly is on the other unaffected RCD so I thought nothing of it. I think I will start to turn off circuits one by one... and start to maintain some kind of log (assuming it will continue happening). Everything has been fine...

Split-load Switch / RCD flipping down repeatedly

There's no sign of rodents (but we do live on the edge of a park), but there's been plenty - plenty - of rain - and that's even more worrying, I guess.

Split-load Switch / RCD flipping down repeatedly

Exactly, at this stage I have literally no idea... it's been happening for about a week... but not every day even, and sometimes multiple times in one day... I'm starting to think weather-related even. If only one of the actual circuits had tripped to provide a clue.

Split-load Switch / RCD flipping down repeatedly

Understandable - and helpful, thanks. The latest occurrence, noticed this morning, was clearly sometime overnight... so everyone was asleep and woke up to find the RCD - alone - had tripped.

Split-load Switch / RCD flipping down repeatedly

Hi all, I am not preparing to do any work myself - this is beyond me - but I'd appreciate any thoughts about it so I can have a useful discussion with an Electrician when one eventually comes to visit. My consumer board has a number of separate circuits and 2 x 80A 30mA RCDs... one of the RCDs...

    Retro-fit backdraft shutter?

Thanks, I wasn't sure you weren't pulling my leg... but I am sure that my arms aren't that long to be able to reach the cowl at the other end and manipulate it (never mind remove the existing cover). Everything (everyone) is saying cowl. I concur.

    Retro-fit backdraft shutter?

Cowls were always on my to-do list, having seen them on other buildings. It's just having no knowledge and problematic accessibility. I'll progress the cowl angle.

    Retro-fit backdraft shutter?

Am I sure? Well... no, I'll admit that. It's just I pinned it on when we had Storms Dudley, Eunice and Franklin - I thought that was in 2021... but I must be a little mixed-up as Google tells me they were early in 2022. (?) Anyway, we had water ingress throughout the building and the stains on...

    Retro-fit backdraft shutter?

I figured that was a joke... but I know nothing about these things, really, so I'm gonna ask... is that actually a serious comment that has legs? I can imagine I can get it up there, dangling around, but doesn't it then need screwing into the wall from the outside anyway?
