BS7671:2008(2015) - Cmin=0.95 and no other obvious surprises

So it's £75 for trivial changes that could have easily been incorporated in an 18th edition with game changing amendments. It's becoming tiresome having to up date your library so often for minutia. But I guess as the salaries of the movers and shakers of our industry increase exponentially they...

    electrical pricing

For 5 hours work it seems to me that this is going to be the most basic installation. Personally too expensive in my opinion. Like previous posters I would select a couple of sparks from the electrical safety register and ask for detailed quotes (particularly what cable and accessories he is...

Cooker hood power cable; what is this thing?

Are you sure it's the cable that's gone...there are a myriad of problems that can happen to cooker hoods..the most common that I see are motor/capacitor problems and PCB and switches. Anyway here is a link for 28 pages of spares for your hood...hope this helps...

    Smoke Alarms in Rented Property

Reckon if it just a family then LD3 will apply...but if it is HMO then LD2. LD1 – alarms fitted in all rooms or areas where a fire may start. LD2 – alarms fitted in escape routes and high fire risk areas e.g hall, landing/s plus kitchen and main living room. LD3 – alarms fitted in escape...

Bit of a mess of installing sockets in plasterboard

Very reminiscent of that period in the 80's when DIY'ers tried to do everything in the home. This is just so amateurish...beyond what is credible in this day and age!!! AWFUL!!!

    Oven element blown, fan question

When the fan works or doesn't work is pure coincidence. Fan should come on immediately you turn dial to fan assisted setting. If you switch to grille setting then the fan will not come on. Clearly the fan is the next thing to be replaced on your maintenance agenda.

Building regulation compliance certificate - copies?

Contact the sparky...2 ways he should have done this..If he is a member of a scheme (Elecsa,Napit, Niceic) he would have registered this work with his scheme provider who would in due course inform the council who would then send you a compliance certificate. OR the sparky dealt with a ad...

    Oven element blown, fan question

Sounds like the wrong element has been sent out. I've replaced many of these and the usual drill is take the oven model type and order a suitable element to suit. As to the fan it should come on immediately. I've got a sticky one in my oven that doesn't always come on as it should do. I tap the...

    Cooker Point for 3KW / 13amp cooker???

The thing I don't like is the socket is behind the cooker...I much prefer to see isolation in an accessible position

Electric Towel Heating Rail - installation problem

Doesn't sound like an electrician to me wiring it into a lighting circuit . Did he give you an Electrical Installation Certificate? Work in a bathroom is subject to Part P of the building regs and this should be tested and certified. If not you have recourse to Trading Standards or whatever...

Is there a simple way to figure out if a house needs a re wi

Get a sparky in to do an Electrical Installation Condition Report. A full test of the wiring and a good visual inspection would highlight any deficiencies. Will cost you in all probability 100-150 but if he's thorough money well spent.

    Decent multimeter

Your opinion Monkeh fair play...but I've never had a problem with it in 9 months. I'd say it was accurate. Sure I use it infrequently but for £20 I'd say it was a good buy. I've got good robust meters for the "real" work but for a diyer or for something that gets used fairly infrequently I'd say...

    Decent multimeter

In fact he did not get a turd. I have one of these. I purchased it mainly for mreasuring capacitance and also kilo ohms and milliamps...something not possible on my Kewtech or fluke. For the price an absolute bargain, especially for diy. See here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3y5wjaNusr0

    Decent multimeter

Thought he was just a hobbyist tracing circuits, voltages etc...yeah if he's going to do full domestic testing then a MF is required at 500+
