Right, found the problem. One of the gatevalves on the main heating circuit was still shut. Doh! Anyway, thanks for your comments.

Some of the valves were turned off (prior to draining) but they've all been turned back on again. The boiler is a an Ideal Standard Icos m3080. I don't know how to check the air pressure in the expansion vessel as there's no gauge (only gauge is on the pipes). Had a go a bleeding this morning...
