FAO: Admin/ Mods - RE: Floor Tiling Page on DIYnot.com

I have just read the floor tiling page thingy found here and thought I wonder how many people struggled to set out and lay the tiles after reading it and even more frightening, how many tiles have fell off/ come up after fixing wrong. I wondered how I go about doing a real write-up/ advice...

    Tiling onto brick stairs

Should you go down this route or not is up to you but... BS says that if the paint isn't compatable with the adhesive it needs to be "machanically removed" (scrape it and sand it and try to get as much of it of as you can) Then assuming the stairs are concrete or brick, you can tile on them...

    Boarding before tiling?

Sorry to but in again people, I would feel that i was doing wrong if I didn't correct you. You can tile over wood (direct on tongue and groove boards with 'fastflex' which you would need to prime the floor firstly) or on a minimum of 15mm marine ply using a 2 part flexible class aa adhesive...

Tiling external corners, trim or mitre?

I am on the understanding that a perfect tiling job would to use trim on any tile that hasn't got a glazed edge. If you mitre a glazed tile externally, you will have one seriously bad corner in a year or two when the tiles get elbowed a couple of times after coming home from having a few...

    Tiling upstands

Tank the walls (and bond them to the tray) with a product called BAL WP1 (water protection one, mentioned once or twice on here) then tile over it with a slightly thicker bed of adhesive above it to keep the tiles vertical. Without knowing the thickness of the upstand I can't tell you what type...

    tiling

I agree with Adam. Be careful of the weight. If the tiles that are on have been fixed to plaster, you can only go to 20kg per sqm, if they have been fixed to plasterboard, they can go to 32kg per sq m. That's not the actual 'fall off the wall' weight, it's BS or Gypsum's statement. So you...
