Well the chap arrived just before 5 for his 3 o'clock appointment, a call may have been nice. Spends 10 minutes hitting the gas valve with a pair of my pliers which did induce a miniscule 'flame' for a second on the pilot. Blocked pipe he says & tries to remove it with the pliers to no avail...
