16 gauge

I think I can use a 18 gauge nail fired from a nailgun on the 3mm plywood but can I use a 18gauge nail on the 18mm chipboard? Otherwise I was going to get a 90mm (max penetration depth) 1st fixing nailgun which uses 16gauge nails. Something like one of those Dewalt ones but I want a corded...
