outisde tap

Good evening, I have an outside tap with a 3/4"thread. I'm trying to set up outside irrigation and the timer connector is 1". It comes with a 3/4" to 1" adapter which I thread on as far as it can go. The connector leaks and I initially thought i was a problem with the connector itself however...
