shellac removal

Hi. I have used meths and wire wool to remove dirty, old shellac from a footstool with turned legs. It has left a black residue of dirt in the grain which is proving difficult to sand away (because of the awkward fiddly shape & the fact that it's ingrained). Is there an easier way to clean off...
