evening all,
I'm the "proud" owner of a Ravenheat RSF 100ET (for those who don't know it, its the sort that when I phone for an engineer they breathe through their noses, hyperventilate, and then make their excuses).

The boiler was in situ when I bought my house, and in the ensuing 8 years I've never quite had the money to buy a replacement, while in actual fact having spent far more than the cost of a new one in maintenance.

Today the boiler has begun doing something odd after 12 odd months of steady service.

When heating rads, its fine, and burns solid for as long as it needs to, with occasional stops of 15 to 20 seconds followed by re-ignition.

However when heating hot water, it cuts out every 20 seconds, and then waits around 40 and re-ignites, then repeats this cycle.

I did some basic diagnosis and realised that the hot water temperature dial on the front of the boiler is the cause - if I crank that up anywhere past the optimum it cuts out instantly, and in order to fill a bath it needs to be a small measure below the optimum which is just about hot enough for the bath in question.

I'm of a mind that this is a switch that needs replacing, or maybe a thermistor, but I'm not sure.

Can anyone give me guidance to answer this?

Its possible that the problem is a thermister but the more usual fault that gives your symptoms is a dirty plate heat exchanger.
