I have no clue about plumbing so just bare with me whilst I try and describe my problem. I have an open fire with a back boiler. Today the pump that heats the radiators didnt work so I had to run off the hot water. I changed the fuse and got the fire going again but still the pump didnt work. I now think it must be something else as my pipes are banging and I can hear a bubbling sound in the pipes near my hot water cylinder. One of the small pipes is boiling hot but the water isnt going anywhere. I have tried running the tap but its cold! Any ideas?

Is there a motorised valve in the airing cupboard, If so you need a new pump, If there isn't then the hot water is gravity fed and you need to turn down the boiler thermostat. switch the immersion heater on, and find out if there is a blockage in the pipe going into the middle of the cylinder, or an air lock,

thanks guys. I think it is an gravity fed system. Peter I was thinking there must be a blockage or airlock somewhere. I could hear the pipes banging with the hot water and the pipe in the airing cupboard was boiling but the water wasnt going anywhere. Think i will have to get a pro in tomorrow.

Before you get a pro in make sure there is water in the expansion tank in the loft, could save you a call out for something simple.

yes picasso is right check small F&E tank hasn't got a stuck valve, it happens a lot, then water level drops and tank empty's.
