Dear all

I am spending my first winter in a house we bought this year. Every morning we are being woken by banging / tapping etc from the radiator in our bedroom. It seems to be the only radiator doing this. this morning it has being doing it since it came on through to now, so about and hour. Banging seems to be becoming more intermittent now.

Can anyone help me get my sleep back? I believe the system is a water system the boiler is by potterton. I have no idea if it is relevant but we also have a megoflow. I think that is for hot water though. If you hadn't guessed I am a plumbing newbie.

Thanks for any help.

Josh

It may be something as simple as missing bracket insulating pieces allowing metal to metal contact. There is a lot of difference between tapping and banging though.

Hi

thanks for the response. It seems to happen has the system heats up and in a metalic clanking sound mixed with some tapping. Any help appreciated .

thanks

One cause may be what I mentioned in my 1st response and only you can see if the insulators are missing. It may also be poorly fitted / secured pipework.

If you have a thermostatic radiator valve on the radiator it could be this causing the problem and is on the wrong side of the radiator.
Remove the thermostatic head and see if the problem goes away.

Hi

Is a thermostatic head the knob you turn to different numbers ie 0 to 9? If so it s on the right of the radiator as you face it. Also tried to bleed it today but the bleed valve thing was so stuck the key broke!

We moved in April and I suspect the previous owner had never bled the radiator.

Yes remove the head it should unscrew at the base.

We are experiencing Noisy Clanking Radiators, the plumber who installed the system was consulted but he said "Expansion/Contracting of pipes causes this rattling".

However the noise abates when we alter the valves on right of radiator a little. But, you cannot be running around doing this all the time. The Boiler is a ew one Vokera and the valves read Altech.

Any ideas or suggestions- it is driving us mad! and losing sleep.
