Black & Decker GR298 Lawnmower switch

I'm attempting to repair one of these

There was a flash in the switch and now doesn't work.

Having looked, it appears that the body is held together with shear head bolts.

Any suggestions on how to dismantle the switch?

Drilling the bolts heads off seems feasible.

Surely it must open up easily - how else would you connect the cable to it?

Start looking for someone who has one in stock anyway - yours could well be broken.

Having been assembled with shear head bolts and seen what parts are available, I believe its not meant to be opened after factory assembly. In the factory the bolts are tightened until the heads shear off so making them none-removable.

I have looked on-line and only the complete switch assembly is available, inc. switch to motor cable.

The mains cable is connected to the switch body via an accessible pod that screws on the body. The switch itself is not accessible.

The switch assembly is 75% the price of a new mower so time for a new mower.

Just double check they are shear head and not the new style torx bit head with the 2 small slots in the circumference?

Probably not worth stripping, are new switches readily available?

Or replace the assembly with any old switch that's suitable and you can mount on the handle.

HI just reappeared my gr298 mower.I had a faulty rocker switch inside the switching handle,which you can only purchase as a complete unit for around £35.I found a replacement at maplands for£2.50 job done back to cutting the lawn.I hope this is useful to someone vince mk

Provided the rocker switch from maplands (?) has the correct type of contact assembly it should be OK. Some switches are designed to switch inductive loads such as motors and are designed to fail OPEN circuit to reduce the risk of the motor continuing to run. Some less expensive but apparently identical switchs will fail with the contacts welded CLOSED meaning the motor continues to run even though the switch rocker ios in the OFF position.
