Im trying to change a 1 way light switch but its got 3 wires instead of 2. 1 on top 2 on bottom put them into L1 an L2 but no joy some one help me please ! 1

Sounds like you have the wrong switch. The way you described the existing set-up tells me it was 2 way. Were all 3 wires in seperate terminals ?

Not necessarily Ricicle, has the the switch got a Common terminal?? if so by connecting to l1 and l2 nothing will happen.

or maybe as ricicle says its a two way switch and your trying to replace it with a 1 way .

Yes the wires were all in seperate terminals, one up top and two down bottom the new switch same set up as old one gang two way switch one on top and L1 and L2 3 red wires in box seperate earth

the new switch is 1 gang 2 way switch i got 3 wires all red have wired them in but no joy at all

you said you connected them to L1 and L2 , what about common??? if there is nothing in there it wont work,

Nick

I fixed wire into common too, all the wires are red should i move them about? do you reckon i got them in wrong places? ta for your help its much appriciated

There is one red wire on its own and two coming from same place next to each other

I really thought i had payed attention to what went where, I have tried putting the single into common and the two into L1 an L2 its the right switch tho yeah? its just my terrible wiring whats mucking it up

The switch you took off had three connections yes? and the new one has the same yes?

in that case the connections are there somewhere, but it seems you have confused them somewhere, does it just not work at all or are you getting the light staying on or what ?

Nick

Not coming on at all, so the connections are there just not in the right places?

you have turned it back on at the fusebox havent you ? if so then yes the connections must be wrong you have tried using the other two way switch and see if that makes it come on
