Dear All

I am hoping someone may be able to help me.
I have a Ravenheat WhiteStar LS100 Combi Boiler, it is only a couple of years old and it is sited in the airing cupboard upstairs.

We are having a problem with it when it reaches its temperature.
The boiler heats up ok and radiators and hot water is fine.
The problem we have is when the boiler reaches its temperature - I think it must have an internal thermostat as we don't have anything on the wall in a different room - it clicks off as it should do - but then it fires up again immediately, seconds later it turns off and then once again fires up. It continues to do this constantly.

It is as though the difference between the lower and upper temperature range is too small and therefore the boiler is constantly firing up.

Has anyone any ideas if this is what is causing it and what we may be able to do with it.

Since we have had the boiler it has had 2 new PCB's (which I don't think is normal)

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Jackie

I am not sure about your model but the 84 does not seem to have any anti cycling delay and will come back on after a very short delay of about 15-20 seconds.

I have not been paid to investigate that situation but all the boilers of that model that I have been to have behaved in exactly the same way.

Thanks Tony

The operating booklet states that it does have an anti cycling device and that it shouldn't re-ignite within 3 mins but this is not the case as it fires up within seconds

not sure what we can do about it
just worried that it is not doing the boiler any good to keep firing up all the time.
the only way to stop it is to turn it off - but obviously then we have no heating!

I have guessed that the boiler might have an engineers test link to disable the delay but the boilers are being sent out with it disabled.

One of mine was fitted by a non CORGI who would not have touched any internal settings.

Its a pity no one has ever wanted me to investigate although I have always pointed out the fault to the owner.

Thanks for your response Tony

Sounds like I just have to put up with it - or get a new boiler

Regards

Jackie

Take out a british gas service agreement, wait six weeks and then tell them about a fault thats just appeared on the boiler . They have got the time and financial muscle to dick about with one of these lower end market boilers. As you can tell I,m not a fan of these boilers, perhaps I need to go on their training course!

There is still time for you to go on the ARGI visit to Ravenheat on Friday 30th November in Leeds.

Correct me if I am wrong but I did not notice the words "room stat" in the previous posts.(a, this lot will tell me if I am wrong, emoticon)

As the room stat take off from the PCB is 24v it is safe to run a two core speeker cable or bell wire from the PCB to a room stat in the hall or a room of your choice.

For just under £40 Wicks do a 24hour programerble room stat that has set back temperature settings. (siemans Rev 11)

This would give satisfactory control of your heating system and reduce the amount of gas wasted due to the appliance cycling.

Thanks for all your replies.

and apologies if I get this wrong but i'm not too technical when it comes to this.

Tim to follow on from yours - the boiler does has a timer on it and is programmed to come on and off at certain times of the day
but this is not the problem we are having

Is what your suggesting something to do as well as having the timer on the boiler already?

Thanks

Jackie

The boiler has a place on the PCB for a room stat to be wired in, this would then control the boiler in a more satisfactory way than the boiler stat.

I have installed a few Ravenheat boilers, I usually fit a programerble room stat, this gives far better control of the temperature within the dwelling. I set the boiler timer to manuel so in effect the boiler is always on.
However the programerble room stat takes over from the boiler stat in that it controls the room temperature as well as what time the appliance comes on and goes off.
Also the REV 11 has a set back temperature, this is where during what you might call the off periods the stat will not demand heat from the boiler until temperature of the room in which the stat is situated drops below the setting you will have entered into the stat.

So during the peak times you might select 20 degrees centigrade and during the other periods you could select lest say 15 degrees.

This would have the effect of preventing you house getting to cold, although for most of the year the boiler wont fire up during the night.

If 15 is to high for you then just reduce it a degree or two.

Hope that helps.

Tim

PS I dont know if I am aloud to recommend a member of the association that I am in to do the work for you. He is a young, very polite, family man who I would have no hesitation in getting to assist you. He lives in the Cheshire area.
