Recently i started noticing brown bits coming through my hot water. Cold water seems to be fine but there are brown bits in the hot which comes from a water cylinder.

Im not a 100% convinced that the brown particles are rust as they dont seem to be flakey bits.

It doesnt seem to happen all the time, sometimes a bath can be run without any bits showing up other times there is a fair amount of brown on the bath.

I will try and post a pic if it helps....

Any ideas how to solve it?

Its a water cylinder fed from a cold water tank above.

Check the cold tank in the loft for dead vermin etc!

Make sure it has a suitable lid.

What type of boiler and cylinder do you have?

Is there a separate tank in loft ?

If you have an indirect cylinder which is heated from a seperate boiler, it could be that the coil in your cylider has rusted and there is now a hole allowing the water which goes through your boiler finding its way into your cylinder.

You may even have a primatic cylinder that has lost its air bubble... do you have one ot two tanks in the loft? Only one tank and it may be primatic cylinder...

To be Quite honest im not sure what boiler i have. all i know is i have a Hercal Coil Indirect cylinder (?). Above that is the cold water feed tank. Then in the attic i have another tank which is rapped in some kind of insulation (presumably the heating tank).

I spoke to someone at my local plumb shop and was advised to flush it out with Sentinel X300 universal cleaner.

Only problem is i cant get access the the tank above the cylinder to put the stuff in. i can only see the bottom 2 inches of the tank from the airing cupboard and no access to it from the attic.

any other ideas....?
