In my workshop I have an old -ish commercial grade B&D rotary sander which takes those round Velcro sanding pads. It sort of sands in tiny oscillations without the entire head rotating much at all. Sorry, I'm explaining it badly, because I don't really know what I'm talking about, but....

It seems the slow motion might be perfect for buffing the likes of paintwork, if they make a suitable buffing/polishing pad for it. Is there likely to be such a pad, or would I need to buy a specialist buffing machine please?

It's called a 'random orbit' sander and you can buy 'buffer' pads for them, won't be as good as a dedicated polisher but worth a try, the pads won't be expensive.

The dedicated polisher machines aren't expensive, but they do require a bit of learning to avoid burning the paintwork. There are videos on youtube.
