I want to install a wood burner. The current opening is 55cm which I suspect is too narrow. Is it likely there is a lintel in this scenario.

Is it usually reasonably easy to open up a fireplace to accommodate a wood burner?

I suspect I would want a stove 45cm wide, so suspect I would need an opening of c70cm.

You might be lucky there and find the opening has been made smaller.
Check there is a lintel before anything else.

Putting a new lintel is straight forward but you will need props.
