Hi all

I have a 2001 Astra SRI 1.8, its coming up to 80k miles and the manufactures recommend the cambelt to be replaced every 40k miles, on older cars wasn't the recommendation every 80k miles, I thought this was a little OTT but Im no mechanic - hence this post. I was quoted around the £200 mark for belt & tensioners etc. Is this about right?

Hi Fattony,Yes you are right, the vauxhall belt change was recommended for 80k.With experience they revised it back to 40k,and cars going into vauxhall garages got a sticker in the service book stating this. Happened about 1999-2001 I seem to think. The belts were often ok but if they came off due to a faulty tensioner or water pump, the engine damage was just the same.
Thats why most replacement belt quotes now include tensioners etc.
