Cleaning natural carpet

Hi everyone. Hope you can help me!

I have a stairway carpet which I think is seagrass and I would like to clean it. Is this a job for the professionals or can I do it myself? If it's DIY possible, what sort of products should I use and do I need to hire a special vacuum? I understand that natural carpets have to be 'dry' cleaned.

I would leave it to the pro's, some carpets do indeed need to be dry cleaned.
If you do it yourself you run the risk of shrinkage due to excess water, by dry cleaning only a minimum amount of water is used and the machines have great suction to withdraw the water and dirt.
I know Chemdry specialise in dry cleaning but beware there are a lot of cowboys out there, i would refuse any offer of £40 or under, dependant on where you live that is

If the flooring is genuine sisal or seagrass, get a pro to inspect it.

If you have any sort of spillages on the floorcovering you have little chance of getting the stains out.

You do not want much moisture on the product, it will shrink and destroy the look.

As for vacuuming, you should use a vacuum that does not have a beater bar, the rollers will agitate the flooring and cause it to look 'hairy' on the surface increasing pilling.

In short, Sisal or Seagrass? leave it to the pro's, and don't expect miracles!

If it's a 100% wool loop or blend of wool/man made fibre loop, you stand much more of a chance with the advice above, but again, don't use vacuum's with beater bars and don't expect miracles. 100% natural fibre floorcoverings don't clean as well as product with an element of manmade fibre in them or more standard types of finish such as twist pile.
