I have a spring flowering clematis that has now got too large and is out of control. It is a beautiful plant when in flower but now is the time to do something to reduce its size. There seems to be a lot of dead wood at the back and it has grown much higher than the fence on which it is growing. The question is, how do I thin this lot out without causing terminal damage to the plant?

I'm not a gardener per se, but if it was mine I would try cutting the deadwood back to the height of the fence to begin with. Leave it for for, say, 2 weeks and if it looks ok take another 2 feet off the deadwood. Perhaps doing it gently in stages won't be such a shock to the plant.
Others may have different methods/ideas as I'm not sure if this will work.
