I've got an unvented system with the cylinder in the loft. The shower in the converted loft works on a thermostatic mixer valve which is barely warm enough to shower under comfortably. There is a similar arrangement on the floor below and the shower is fine. What could be the problem ?

Could be the mains cold inlet pressure is poor and therefore as the top shower is higher it has less pressure.

Other than that you need to check for blockages in the hot feed pipes to it.

Could be:

1. Faulty thermostatic shower valve;
2. Scaling;
3. Other pressure/flow problem (i.e. blockage/constriction/poor pipework).

What make and model is the shower, for how long has it been installed, and has it ever worked satisfactorily?

Its a Sagittarius Ergo EL/192/C valve. Been installed for about 18 months and has worked fine until about a month ago.

In my experience, statistically, the problem is likely to be a fault with the shower valve.

In case you don't have it, the number for the Sagittarius helpline is 0161 620 2029.

I would call and get their advice - you might be pleasantly surprised and find that they honour a long warranty.

Another possibility is scale affecting either an inlet filter and/or check valve, or the thermostatic cartridge itself.

I would disassemble the valve (not the cartridge) and soak all components overnight in a solution of 2 parts water to 1 of white vinegar, then reassemble and see what happens.

Pity we were not told this originally.
