We live in a 1966 brick built semi. A small number of the bricks making up the window sills have literally crumbled and broken away. Oddly, these bricks sit between ones that have no signs of decay whatsoever.

Does anyone know why this has happened and what we should do?

I guess the bricks are flettons.....light pink crumbly clay on the ones that are decaying.....Don`t know why but some just fall apart...don`t resist the weather so well  Replace all ...cut out with diamond disc in angle grinder...bricks can be matched @ builders merchant...maybe stock brick can be found to give a pleasing colour ? will last forever.

maybe the window was fixed too these bricks causing damage or this is where the rain gathers most.
