dishwasher won't run

I have a Kenmore dishwasher that makes a humming noise when I turn it on, but won't complete its cycle. Also filled up the bottom with water when I tried to run it and didn't drain. I tried to empty most of the water, but that didn't seem to help. Suggestions?

Is the pump directly in the bottom of the washer with the lower impellor on it. We don't even have a book for this thing, thanks for your reply.

Thats probably where it is, see if you can move it, try the handle of a wooden spoon, try both ways, mine jammed (not kenmore) it was a chicken bone first time & a piece of glass 2nd time.
