I am having a gas (log burner effect) stove installed in front of an old redundant chimney breast. There is no hearth there at present and the flue will run on the surface of the breast.
To save money i was thinking of installing a hearth myself, that raps around the chimney breast, as a granite one is looking to cost around £600-£700.
I have seen some 600 x 300 black porcelain tiles in Wickes that would look good.
I was thinking of making a 15mm raised area using sand/cement, laying the floor, leaving a 10mm gap to the raised area, and then laying the tiles overlapping the edge of the floor to hide the expansion gap.
Also i think that the regs say the hearth should extend 300mm in front of the fire. Is this still the case if the fire is sitting on a bench which will lift it 200mm above the hearth?
