Do I need a layer of stone when installing artificial grass for drainage or can I just lay it on top of sharp sand.

When next door had theirs laid, they had several layers. I seem to remember at least 6” of stone or type 1, whackered, sand, a membrane and possibly one other.

Have watched a bandq video on YouTube which shows laying direct on sand with a membrane but on other videos the stone is used which led me to question whether it is needed or not
