I just replaced a 3 way switch with a dimmer switch I got from my neighbor. It does not have wiring diagram with it. THe dimmer has a slide control with a push button on/off and a light on the button. The light does not work on the button and the button does not turn the lights on or off, however the dimmer part works great. I have black, white,, red, and ground for my leads, and 2 blacks, red, and ground on the switch itself. Could it just be a faulty switch? Also, there is a lot of heat on the metal parts of the switch and that doesnt seem right. Any help would be appreciated.

The dimmer is nakered, the faceplate should not see any noticable rise in surface temperature during use. They may get a little warmer than ambiant, but so much as you consciously notice it.
