External paint that is not breatheable

My FIL is looking to buy a one bed maisonette. The damp survey has flagged up that the external walls has been painted in non breatheable paint so it is recommended that this should be removed and repainted with breatheable masonry paint.

Anyone come across this before? How much do you think something like that would cost to do? 5k? Any ideas if the paint can be left alone?

Yeah, the question is how easy is it to remove the old paint with chemical

There are companies that will strip paint from houses. You can also use chemicals like peelaway paint stripper.

It might be the case it would be better just to remove the render and start again.

It is brick that has been painted over

I think that some in the trade don't always agree with the damp survey companies.
I know I don't.
What you need to do is educate yourself and try some things first and see how things go.
You may find you solve your problem cheaply.

The home survey identified damp and condensation and recommended that we get a damp survey with a specialist company that is a member of the the PCA, who are not damp treatment companies but damp specialist surveyors who only identify damp and recommend actions. That way they are independent as they are not selling you the treatment.

That video is where you get the damp treatment company round who want to sell you their services. So yes, avoid them.

the report identified a few factors that are causing mould on the walls and damp readings. The others I am aware of so I can sort out myself but this one about the external paint not being breatheable is a new one to me. I have never heard of such a thing before and when I googled it, it said non breatheable external paint is a no no as it means the walls can not breathe and so the moisture can not escape.

wondered if anyone has come across such a problem before and how much would something like this cost to replace. I know how much it costs to repaint the exterior of a house but i don't know how much it would cost to strip the existing paint from the brickwork with chemicals. would be good to get an idea and thought maybe someone on the forum had experience of this and can tell me how much they think it would cost to strip the paint.
