Extractor Fan Ducting through Joists.

I have a shower in the downstairs bathroom and I want to fit a ceiling shower extractor fan. But to get to the outside wall I would have to put the ducting through 2 wooden joists. Are you allowed to do this? If so what is the maximum size of hole you are allowed to drill?

can you not run with the joists? it would be better
