I am trying to fit a wooden bi-fold door into a frame that has previously been fitted with a standard door, i.e has a rebate. The carpenter that came as told me that this is not possible...is this true?

no,ive fitted 1 to my boys bedroom door, and he has a metal d/frame with a rebate.
take your time and think it through,i have ours folding out into the hallway because its the box room.

Are you trying to change the door to open in opposite direction due to space restriction, that's the only reason I can think the carpenter would be right.

dont matter, the old door on my boys room opened into the room, the bi fold i fitted folds out into the hallway, that way he got a bit more space.
