I need to fill a hole in my floor, its brown council style tiles, a few have come up and replacing them isn't an option without pulling up more floor and risking more damage. Just need it smooth so I can put vinyl on top.

What can I fill it with?

The trouble with laying vinyl flooring over tiles is that you generally get the odd outline of the tile visible on the vinyl. If you have a few tiles to fill in, it might be worth giving the whole floor a going over with some self levelling compound.

Thanx gcol, but the rest of the vinyl is already laid, I was just replacing a couple of strips that had got badly scratched (10 min job me thought...yeah right  ) If I use the compound (don't know what that is but I'm sure the nice man in the diy shop will point me in the right direction) will it scrub of the vinyl when its dry as I'm bound to make some mess.
Is there a better way of getting the strips up, I just peeled these ones and have a couple more need replacing but the adhesive on the vinyl is obviously stronger than the adhesive on the tiles.

Your vinyl is in strips? Was it fitted like this or have you cut it to get up a damaged bit?
Sorry but I can't recommend a better way than physically pulling the vinyl up - you can however, remove bits that are stuck to the tiles by sliding a spade along the floor.
If you decide to use self levelling compound, try and get it from a buiders merchants and not the diy stores - they'll often charge a lot more than a good merchants will. I've seen a 20kg bag at B&Q for £20 and the same stuff from my local merchants was £10.50

vinyl as in tiles

Anyway, its all filled and back to normal, thanx again for you advise.
