Gate Latch Twist

DIY newbie looking to fix a twist gate hatch as one side of the hatch twists and allows to lock but the other side the handle doesn't lift the hatch when turned.

Assume this is an easy job but what tools are needed and what is the process to fix it?

Have you drilled out the hole in the gate and put the spindle in between the two handles, so the action works?

Do you mean one of these "Gate LATCH"
The square spindle has to be cut very accurately to ensure a snug fit ,[ often only a few mm on one side to receive spindle], if you did not cut then the gate may be thicker than the spindle is intended for in which case you can buy a separate longer one and cut to size.
