Hi - I Purchased last weekend 2 6x6 9ft gate posts which had a few shakes in them. A week later after being stored outside in my garden (covered) now have shakes / splits everywhere. Is this normal? I am not really happy about this as it looks pretty naff.....and do not want to spend the next 20 years peed off. I am due to put them in tomorrow and deciding whether to take them back, if they would take them back. Or will and gate posts do this?

It's fairly normal and due to drying Offhand I think the fencing standard says something like "checks not to exceed more than 1/2 the depth", but no limit on their number.

If you want timber not to split and check so much, try get the timber pith free (not as easy) , and get a small movement timber like larch/cedar/doug fir.

Should have left them uncovered , they would not have dried further, after all once installed they will be out in all weathers.
