The loud groaning is coming from the mains pipe leading to the storage tank in the loft. It happens for a short time whenever water flows into the tank. In the short section where the pipe is accessible, I can feel the vibration, but securing the pipe by hand doesn't help. The problem seems to date only from a few weeks ago, when I turned off the main to install a new clothes washer.
Could it be anything to do with the float valve on the storage tank? I mention that only because I can't think of anything else.
