Hi, first post on here but been reading the forums on and off for best part of a decade so hoping to benefit from some of the wisdom I’ve seen extolled on here. I’m a limited DIYer but coming on everyday with daily tonics of YouTube videos. I enjoy rolling my sleeves up and doing the dogs body side of things, so asking something that conventional wisdom would say “No” to but I don’t mind the tidying up needed.

I’d like to rip ceilings and joists out and replace with new properly sized ceiling joists. House is a 1930s 3 bed semi with no felt behind the tiles and most of the flashing has disintegrated and laying as dust in between the joists. I plan on rolling up all loft insulation, tying with string, bagging up and placing outside, then clean up all dust and sh*t between the joists, move out and double cover everything in bedrooms underneath. Would cut the ceiling plaster from above between the joists, then take the joists out, (creating a momentary vaulted ceiling) clean up, get new timbers hoisted up into bedrooms, all for a Joiner I’ve used in the past to hang the new joists (done similar with removing a chimney that ran through a bathroom and changed the ceiling joists)

From my understanding, most wouldn’t do it this way because of the mess and disruption, but i’ve got time on my hands and would prefer to future proof the area for any future habitual space. Roof rafters don’t seem to be contingent on the joists for support either.

I’ll have a SE involved because I plan on getting RSJs up there to support chimney stack and remove throughout the house underneath and would need to joist out that resulting void anyways. Existing joists are 3x2 and are sagging in one of the bedrooms.

Appreciate any feedback.

Sounds like you have it under control. Crack on.
It's a horrible job with the mess and dust. Get decent respirators Vs paper masks.
Eye protection as dust will cause conjunctivitis or other.
Fans bowing out doors and windows.
Tarps on floors.
I have never saved loft insulation successfully.

Kingspan and insulated plasterboard an option?
