Is there any system that has a header tank for the rads but no vent pipe because this place had no vent pipe on the header tank only on on the cold tank (for hot tank ) I was only about 10 year old install and it was a bastard to refill

Yes fairly common and is referred to as combined feed and vent. They can be a pig to refill if not installed with air release valves fitted to high points in system.

Yes, some open systems have only a feed from the F&E tank, but no vent. Only boilers with overheat protection as well as details in the manufacturers instructions allowing went-free installation can have this layout.

Yes, filling is slower, and more difficult, as the water filling the system from the tank slows down the escaping air that is displaced from the system.

Open some upstairs rad vents as the system fills, but don't leave them unattended, or you may get a flood.

I would have thought that the training course that you booked in 2007 would have told you that there is not likely to be any system like this for obvious reasons, as all open vented systems must have a vent.
