Heating not coming back on after hot water switched off

I have a conventional boiler - Ideal (although it is far from that at the moment!). Currently I am setting the timer so that the heating comes on (and off) once in the mornings, and again in the evenings, every day. I don't always set the hot water to come on as I don't always need it, so will usually set it to come on/off maybe twice a week. However, I have noticed that if I set the hot water to come on/off on a more 'regular' basis (for example, daily), that if I switch it off (when the heating's on), I lose the heating - the boiler cuts out and won't ignite (even when I switch the heating back on), I get neither hot water nor heating. The only way I can 'remedy' this is to leave both heating and hot water off for a long time (usually overnight) and then they will work again in the morning.

Sometimes when I have both heating and hot water on, and switch off the hot water, the boiler shuts down for a second or so and then re-ignites, but it seems than during the periods I have been using the hot water more often and regularly, there is more chance that when I switch it off, I also lose my heating and can't get it back on. And the reason I do switch the hot water off is that I need as much heat out of the rads as I can get, and they are never as hot when the hot water is also on!

I think I'm hoping for a nice useful tip here to help prevent this happening, but any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Many thanks.

Sounds as if the motorised valve is faulty!

Thanks, Tony. This might be a job for Mr B Gas (unfortunately!).

Cheers.

Tony (or anybody!)

Do you know if the motorised valve would also be the culprit for the kitchen radiator only giving out heat when ONLY the heating is on (ie doesn't give out heat if the hot water is on with the heating)...?

Thanks.

Jane
