Hello all,

I'm hoping I can save myself some hassle and money with your help.

I'm in the process of renting out my house but have hit a snag with the gas fire in the living room. Its a decorative basket effect fire. It's the same one that was installed when I first moved in. I had someone come round to get my gas safety certificates but turns out its too powerful for the room and there is inadequate ventilation. The solution is to drill a vent in the wall (which I don't want) or a new gas fire.

The trouble is the tray/basket is custom made to fit the fireplace. Because of this replacing it will be costly. Is there no way I can keep the tray but replace the mechanism that control the KW output. I called the manufactures "straxgas" but they weren't much use.

Thanks I advance

Simple answer NO

All basket type fires need at least 100cm of ventilation regardless of size plus extra ventilation if it is over a certain size

Just remove it the fire or have the vent installed

Contact Magiglow. They build made to measure basket fires, and subject to certain conditions, will produce a NO VENT model. They won't deal direct, but they will give you a local contact

Where are you?

EDIT: Actually Magiglow are owned by urley, who now own Straxgas. But don't let that put you off. Did you speak to Straxgas or the Straxgas specialists (Ignus) who have no connection? Either way, you would have been looking for a way to circumvent the rules by amending the existing, which is not possible.

Who fitted the fire illegally? Are they still around?

And I now see you are from Glasgow, so slightly off my patch!

just disconnect it - it's probably horribly inefficient anyway. Tell the tenant it's for decoration only.
