Honeywell CM927 Thermostat

Hi,
I've just fitted the Honeywell CM927 thermostat to my old open vented Y-plan system.

Can someone explain the 'optimisation' feature - it is disabled by default. Do I need an external thermostat to detect the outside temperature for it to work or can I just enable it? How does it know how long it take to heat up the house?

It works it out for itself over a period of time.
