I have a Hormann powered up and over double garage door - single section - that has worked for years and years with no issues. Now it stalls just on opening - the door moves a couple of cm then stops. Pressing the remote button again and it closes as it should. If you encourage the door to open by pulling it a bit as it opens, then the door will go all the way. Then continues to operate normally until you leave it for a few minutes and then it repeats its refusal. I have lubricated the hinge points, and tried tied tightening the tension springs a little to give it a bit more of a pull (they are 26 years old, so probably a little bit tired).
Thoughts? I was thinking in hot weather the springs expand a bit and lose tension slightly - maybe enough to stall the motor. But I've tensioned them a bit more and that hasn't really helped. I find it odd that it works when you're looking at it, but go away and come back and it doesn't work!

Any ideas about what to try next?

When you leave it for a while, perhaps the drive system, demands more current to operate the motor, and it is tripping on over-current. Does the controller, have an adjustment for motor current sensing? Raising the door from a fully closed position, the initial start, will be the highest load the motor comes under.

Could be the capacitor failing in the motor. Try disconnecting the arm from the door and see if the door opens freely and is balanced, open halfway and see if it stays there

Is it a SupraMatic or ProMatic, garage doors aren't my thing but have fitted and repaired a few in a past life

I've got a couple of these. Check there isn't anything restricting the door opening. We've had the same issue now and again but usually a small pebble under the door or the dust guard just needs bending up a bit as it drags along the floor and causes the restriction.

Also check the internal arms are free to move ok. They are really sensitive

Hello, did anyone fix this? I have the same problem. Door opens a few inches and stops. Can be closed OK. I've discon-ed the drive and when I open it manually, there's no 'click point' or stiffness around where it stops. Disconnected, the motor drives the chain all the way in both directions. If I attach a rope to the link bar and pull while the motor is trying to open the door it gets through the stop point but will stop further on if I stop pulling. Opens fully if I maintain tension. I will reluctantly go to the local specialist next week but an hour's travel to pay before they even get out of the van.
