hot water not working but heating fine

Hi knowledgable people.
I have an open vented system and a baxi solo 3 pfl60 boiler. Central heating is working fine but the hot water is not. When I switch on the hot water the boiler does not fire and the pump does not come on. I do however hear movement from the hot water m/v but can't remember when exactly (tried various combinations of heating on/off etc). However if I manually move the switch on top of the mv the pump comes on. If I then turn on the hot water from control box the boiler fires up and i have hot water. Does this sound like the m/v needs replacing/fixing?
